Lain wins Dem
primary

The Democrats of Porter County gave Sheriff David Lain an
overwhelming vote of confidence on the job he's done during his
first term as sheriff, choosing him by a 3-1 margin over challenger
W. Chip Yanta and the bold new initiatives he proposed.
Lain moves on to face Republican Ralph Levi, who was unopposed.
"I am, of course, pleased," Lain said.
"I'm hoping it (the vote total) is an indication the people of
Porter County are comfortable with ... the Sheriff's Department. I
think it's a reflection on the men and women of the Sheriff's
Department as much as it is on me."
Yanta was disappointed by the results, but he said the voters have
made their choice.
Lain said his campaign focus has been turning back the challenge
from Yanta, and now he and he will "redouble" his efforts as he
takes on Levi, who, like Yanta, is retired from the Sheriff's
Department.
Lain, in seeking a second term as sheriff, touted his formation of a
Flex Team, a group of officers freed from regular duties to do
special projects, such as traffic enforcement in certain areas or
the targeting of burglary rings. He plans to deploy the group to do
some drug interdiction in the near future.
Lain also bolstered manpower in undercover drug enforcement.
He launched Breakfast with the Sheriff as a chance to strengthen
ties with seniors and the entire community.
Lain said he's also focused on Porter County's youth and the drug
problem. The department hosted a teen safety forum to bring
information about bullying, Internet predators and prescription drug
abuse to students and parents.
He started anti-drug essay contests for fourth- and fifth-grade
students in Porter County and lets the winners ride in parades in
the department's 1967 Chevrolet Impala police car.
Lain said crime has dropped 13 percent during his time as sheriff.
And he is launching two new neighborhood watch programs -- Look Out
for Each Other and Citizen Observer.
Lain tops Democrat challenger Yanta

In the
Democratic primary for Porter County Sheriff, incumbent David Lain
won the party nomination over challenger W. "Chip" Yanta.
Lain took
more than three quarters of the vote to win the nomination, 5,489 to
1,853.
In the fall
election, Lain will face Republican Ralph G. Levi, who ran unopposed
in the primary.
Lain
attributed his victory to the way the department performed since his
2006 election.
"It's a
reflection on the people who work at the sheriff's department.
They're providing excellent service to the people of Porter County,"
Lain said. "I'm the beneficiary of their handiwork."
A sheriff
has a two-consecutive term limit in Indiana and Lain said he wants
to serve another four-year term because he wants to continue what he
started and he wants to make Porter County a better place than when
he came.
He says he
plans to continue campaigning through the fall.
"If people
are satisfied with the level of public safety in Porter County, I
expect to continue on the path I started in 2006," he said.

For the past seven days, we

briefly recapping each of them so you can study this page today and
take it to the polls tomorrow. In races where there is no
opposition, we aren't offering endorsements.

Democrats
Incumbent David Lain has the
experience in both law enforcement and administration that this job
requires. He has good ideas, too. We'd like him to step it up a bit
and work harder to implement those ideas. We endorse Lain.
Sheriff David Lain is a product of labor in
northwest Indiana. His father worked at Inland Steel after
returning from WWII and Dave has United States Steel to thank for
employing him while he was attending Indiana University.
After earning a degree in psychology Dave was
hired by the Valparaiso Police Department and worked there for 22
years as a police officer and supervisor, and twice awarded Officer
of the Year honors. He retired with the rank of lieutenant in 1999
when he was asked to become the Chief of the Porter County Sheriff’s
Department by then Sheriff David Reynolds.
David Lain has always taken a direct hand in
issues concerning labor. As Chief and even now as Sheriff he
can be found personally stopping at picket sites to assure all
parties of equal and fair treatment by the officers of the Porter
County Sheriff’s Department. Sheriff Lain has made a
commitment to never allow any of his employees to work as security
officers at any disputed site.
Sheriff Lain’s history of tough law
enforcement and solid leadership spans 33 years in Porter County.
He attributes much of his success to his practice of partnering with
the people in the communities he serves, to built trust and bring an
effective force against crime.
Sheriff Lain is achieving his goal to further
reduce crime by increasing the number of officers assigned to drug
task forces, and creating a unit of officers that will respond to
“hot spots” throughout Porter County.
This Sheriff has and will continue to have a
policy of honesty, accountability and accessibility for all citizens
of Porter County.

city of Valparaiso in 1977. He retired with 22 years of service
there to accept the position as Chief at PCSD.

seniors and participates in forums that provide insight into the
operation of the Sheriff’s Department and Jail, as well as
disseminate valuable crime prevention ideas.
Under his leadership the first additional police officers were hired
